Dear Friends, Family, Neighbors, and Those of You I Don’t Yet Know —
I’m sending out this quick note to fix an embarrassing blooper from last night’s post, “Slugs and the Numinous.” Apologies.
I quoted my friend Jeff as saying, “The full moon never sets.” Which is not quite right. What he actually said was, “The full moon never sets at night.” We often see the moon setting during the day when it’s full, but not at night.
Probably, at some point, a teacher in your life showed you a science demo where the Earth is a basketball, the moon is a baseball, and the sun is a bright light bulb. At least, if you had a teacher as good as Jeff, you got this demo. Or…maybe you were lucky enough to be in a school system with an actual swiveling wire stand with a lamp and two balls at scale mounted on it. Or maybe you’re young enough so none of this was necessary, and you just got a YouTube video, like this one, instead.
Watch now to understand better why it’s a bad idea to write a story in which two kids sit outside on a full-moon night and watch the moon set. D’oh!
